PAT Testing

What does Portable Appliance Testing involve?

Portable Appliance Testing is the maintenance of electrical equipment which is plugged into a mains supply, the test comes in two parts....

  • The Visual Test involves checking the appliance is correctly wired and fuse rated in the plug top and that the cable trap is in place. We also look for signs of wear which cause the appliance to become unsafe.
  • The Computer Operated Test checks levels of earth Continuity, insulation resistance and earth leakage whilst also testing the operation of the appliance.

Why should I get the testing done?

Carrying out a regular programme of Portable Appliance Testing on electrical equipment within your premises ensures....

  • You are providing a safer environment for your employees and members of the public.
  • You are reducing the risk of electrical fire caused by faulty equipment.
  • You are complying with The Law.

Regulation 4 (2) of the electricity at work regulations 1989 states....
“As maybe necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is practicable, such danger”

How often do I need to get my equipment tested?

Having a procedure in place to ensure your electrical equipment is tested is required by the Health & Safety Executive. How often the testing is carried out depends on how the equipment is used and in what type of environment.

It is our practice to carry out testing in most circumstances every 12 months. Equipment subject to particularly heavy use or equipment used in harsher environments will require testing at more regular intervals, our engineers will inform you of such equipment as we come across it.

Will you cause any disruption to my business?

We need to shut down an electrical item whilst we are testing it, but as soon as we have finished with the item we are working on we will ensure it is powered back up straight away. We may need to get access under desks to reach power cables which means any person within the area will need to allow us the space to do this; however we will do our best to work around you and will therefore cause you minimal disruption.
